  • DIESEL EXHAUST FUEL

    What Is DEF?

Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is a non-toxic, high-purity compound made from urea and deionized water. It's engineered to reduce harmful nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from diesel engines by converting them into harmless nitrogen gas and water vapor. DEF is colorless, odorless, and highly stable, meeting international quality and purity standards, including ISO 22241. Its production and performance are closely monitored by the American Petroleum Institute.

How Long Does a Tank of DEF Last?

A 2.5-gallon container of DEF typically supports over 800 miles of travel. A full 23-gallon tank could potentially take you on a round trip from Los Angeles to Boston and back, depending on fuel consumption. DEF usage averages about 2% of the amount of diesel fuel consumed.

    How Temperature Affects DEF

DEF freezes at 12°F. If frozen, the fluid will thaw naturally when the engine warms or the tank's heating system activates. There's no risk of structural damage to the DEF tank. On the other hand, prolonged storage at temperatures above 120°F can slowly degrade DEF, eventually forming trace amounts of ammonia. However, this chemical change is so slow that it would take more than two years of constant high heat exposure to compromise DEF quality.

How EST Inc. Maintains DEF Quality

EST Inc. uses dedicated tanks, hoses, pumps, and storage systems exclusively for DEF to prevent cross-contamination. All DEF is filtered down to one micron during packaging into drums and totes. After filling, each container is quarantined until it passes laboratory testing to ensure compliance with ISO 22241 standards.

DEF production at EST is handled with strict adherence to cleanliness and chemical integrity protocols. This ensures the product you receive is ultra-pure and safe for use in your vehicle’s Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system.

    Impact on Engine Maintenance

Engines using SCR technology require minimal changes in maintenance routines compared to 2007 engines. The only new point of attention is the DEF filter, which typically needs replacement only every 200,000 miles. SCR also leads to cooler engine operation and fewer harmful contaminants, helping extend engine life and reduce wear.

Important Note: Even a tiny amount of contamination can be disastrous. Just 1.5 teaspoons of salt in 4,500 gallons of DEF is enough to poison an SCR catalyst, potentially leading to massive repair costs and downtime.

    Avoiding Contamination

DEF is extremely sensitive to impurities. Contaminated fluid can severely damage your after-treatment system. To avoid this:

    Always use clean, dedicated equipment.

Wipe fill nozzles before every use.

Keep containers sealed and stored in clean, dry, indoor locations.

Contaminated DEF can cause damage costing tens of thousands of dollars in repairs, downtime, and component replacement.

    Proper Storage and Handling

DEF is not classified as hazardous or flammable by the DOT or EPA. However, it must be stored properly to maintain shelf life and product integrity. Always:

Store containers indoors or in shaded areas.

Keep the valve on totes accessible for easy refilling.

Use only stainless steel or high-density polyethylene materials in DEF-related equipment.

Avoid using carbon steel, copper, nickel, or any materials that can react with urea.

Maintain DEF at temperatures below 86°F for extended storage; it will freeze at 12°F.

Even in freezing conditions, DEF retains its properties and will perform effectively once thawed.

    Chemical Specifications (in plain language)

DEF must maintain urea concentrations between 31.8% and 33.2% by weight. It should have a density between 9.05 and 9.09 pounds per gallon at 77°F and a refractive index between 1.3814 and 1.3843. Its alkalinity (measured as ammonia content) should not exceed 0.2%, which affects shelf life.

Contaminants such as insolubles, calcium, magnesium, sodium, and phosphate must remain at trace levels. Even small concentrations of metals like iron, zinc, copper, nickel, or chromium can damage the SCR system. High biuret content, which may form from degraded urea, can cause crystal deposits inside exhaust systems. All of these impurities must be kept to extremely low limits to protect the engine and emissions system.

    Conclusion

DEF is a vital component in keeping diesel engines clean and compliant. But it’s only effective when handled with care. EST Inc. delivers DEF that meets the most rigorous quality standards to protect your SCR system, engine, and your investment. For best results, follow all handling instructions, avoid contamination, and use only approved materials and equipment.
